monoton / Haruma Tasaki

Bridging instruments and expression across sound, visuals, code and hardware.

monoton is the project of Haruma Tasaki, a Tokyo-based independent artist who makes music, real-time visuals, and the tools that drive them. Treating songs, generative imagery, and the systems behind them as a single practice, he builds his work out of instruments of his own making — visuals with simple, forceful motion, paired with warm, melodic sound.

He performs solo audiovisual live sets and VJs at clubs including WOMB, ZEROTOKYO, clubasia, and CIRCUS TOKYO, creates live visuals for artists such as Tsujii Qunuee, and provides show direction and technical support for events on-site and in virtual spaces. He was selected for Japanese Motion Graphic Creators 2026. Alongside his releases as monoton, he is a member of the artist collective Philtz.

Through his design studio monode-sign, he shares tools born from his own practice with other makers — from the Eurorack module TACTUS to software for visual production.

In the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), he researches interfaces that support and widen a maker's expression by having people and computers create together, each shaping the other.
